Fraud Tools | eMatters.com.au

All transactions where the card is not present (ie Internet, Phone, Fax, Mail) are at risk of fraud. It is our role to work together with you to reduce your exposure to fraud. Each of our custom-developed tools shown here have been designed, developed and maintained by eMatters. This keeps us at the fore-front of fraud detection.
BIN - IP Check

Bin Checking and Blocking is global Bank Identification Number database, containing a list of almost 100,000 Bank Identification Numbers (BINs). The database, named BinCheck has the ability to locate the issuing bank within seconds, allowing the transaction to be processed or rejected. In our first level screening, we check to see if the merchant has restricted cards to their home country. If this test is passed, we progress to checking that the card is from a bank located in the same country as the customer. If both tests as positive, we then send the transaction to the bank for processing.
CVV / CVN / CVC2

Introduced in an effort to reduce the level of fraud, many of our participating banks support the verification of the three digit security code printed in the back of Visa and Mastercards. For Amex, the number is a four digit number printed on the front.

It is important to remember that some banks do not verify this number. Although eMatters submits it to your bank, the cardholder's bank may not be equipped to check it. Also, it is not "foolproof" as it can often be copied from a card at a retail outlet.

SURC - Single Use Response Codes

Each time a payment is approved, eMatters delivers the payment response (08) in an encrypted manner. This encryption changes for every transaction. Incredible security.

IP Global Positioning.

IP Global Positioning, or “IGP” has the ability to locate the user and determine if their country is considered high risk. If it is, the session is closed and we return a declined transaction.

The IGP also stops people from using many of the Anonymous IP Generators available. We believe that to buy from an eMatters Merchant, the user must be willing to declare their true identity. Otherwise the risk of fraud is too great.

3SO - Three Strikes, You're Out

3 Strikes and Out, protecting you from repeated attempts at forcing card numbers through the system. Keeps your merchant fees to a minimum and stops the hackers from using your account to test card numbers. We will only allow three attempts using the same "UID" before it is blocked for 24 hours. Contact our office for full details

Did you know that some banks in Australia no longer give you a credit on your refunds !

So, if your payment page is used for "card testing" and you subsequently have $10,000 deposited into your account. If your MSF is 2%, then even if you refund the $10,000, the bank will still charge your account $200. FOR NOTHING ! 3SO helps in keeping these costs down.

Duplicate Prevention

How often do your customers get "Trigger Happy" and click the payment button twice (or more). With the eMatters gateway, double charging is virtually impossible. We provide three layers of protection to stop this from hitting your account. This alleviates you from refunding and paying the MSF !

eCommerce Fraud Book

We have witrnessed many attempted frauds since our inception (1999, to be precise). Due to this, Chris Dwyer wrote a reference book titled "Selling Snake Oil At LightSpeed". Providing real cases of fraud, attempted fraud and just general "stupidity", it is a must read for all who are new to eCommerce. Perhaps it would make a different type of Christmas present for your business partner ! You have the choice of purchasing a PDF version, or a printed version. Click here to order yours now !

Please note : These features are useful in reducing your exposure to fraud, but they do not completely remove your risk. You still should be very aware when shipping physical goods, making sure you have read our glossary completely. Ultimately, you, the merchant, are resposnsible for all chargebacks, even if our Fraud Screen allows the transaction to be processed with the bank.
